The first one also mentions that VMware Fusion 12 can run macOS High Sierra as a guest. Given you have a Mid 2011 iMac, the maximum operating system Apple supports on that model is macOS High Sierra 10.13.6. I'll assume you have installed High Sierra on your iMac and you are wanting to know if you can run VMware Fusion. Given the compatibility chart in the second article, that means you need VMware Fusion 10.x or 11.x, but not 11.5.5 or later, since 11.5.5 raised in the minimum requirement to macOS Mojave 10.14. You can't run VMware Fusion 12 on that iMac. VMware Fusion It’s probably not surprising that VMware Fusion would also add support for M1 Macs. If you don't have a licence for VMware Fusion 10.x or 11.x, you can get one by buying VMware Fusion 12 then using the My VMware portal to downgrade your licence to VMware Fusion 10.x or 11.x instead.

When M1 first came out I immediately got myself a Mac Mini only to find out VMware doesn't have a Fusion version that would work with it.
While that support didn’t come nearly as fast as Parallels, it is at least here in tech preview at least. Is Debian ARM Linux going to work on an M1 under VMware Fusion. Main part of my work is using a CentOS8 VM on Fusion and that's not gonna work. to let MS and appmakers fix compatibility over time, than expect an entire x86 operating. I had no choice but to continue using my previous Mac. The company said it is 'excited to see the performance, power efficiency, and virtualization features' that Apples new M1 chip brings to the Mac and MacBook lineups. The M1 Mini has beeing sitting on my desk collecting dust the whole time. But it noted that current versions of Parallels Desktop wont be compatible on the new devices. The final release is expected soon, but with that final release comes something that the tech preview doesn’t have: a price tag. You haven't mentioned which operating system you want to run as a guest inside VMware Fusion. This might affect whether it worth pursuing VMware Fusion as a solution: you may be better off buying a newer Mac and perhaps using VMware Fusion on that newer Mac to run an older operating system as a guest.
